List Prices "Not the Full Story" When Examining Drug Cost Changes

Drs. Walid Gellad and Inma Hernandez spoke with Al Jazeera about their study examining changes in prescription drug costs after discounts. They and their co-authors found that, after discounts, prices rose three times higher than inflation. "Previously, we were limited to studying list prices, which do not account for manufacturer discounts," Hernandez explained. "List prices are very important, but they are not the full story."  Gellad adds, "Net prices are not necessarily what patients pay. A lot of the discount is not going to the patient."
