States with Recreational Cannabis Laws Have Decline in Opioid-Related ED Visits

States with recreational cannabis laws had a 6-month decline in opioid-related emergency department visits, according to major new work in Health Economics led by CP3 Faculty Affiliate Dr. Coleman Drake and his team from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute and RTI International.  Dr. Drake spoke with Pittwire, WESA 90.5 FM, and Trib Live about this study, noting, “We don’t find any evidence to support the theory that cannabis functions as a gateway drug...if anything, we find that recreational cannabis legalization decreases opioid-related emergency department visits.”
